What Is the RMPIA?

It's been obvious for a long time the Dow Industrials don't represent the stock market we all invest and trade in every single day. That’s why we created the Real Money Post-Industrial Average (RMPIA).

We asked all our Real Money contributors one simple question: what are the most important stocks today? From those initial suggestions, Jim Cramer further curated the list to give us the inaugural 30 components of the RMPIA.

The moves in this index should give you extra insight into how today's market is doing.

Digging into the finer details, RMPIA is a modified market-cap weighted portfolio. The weightings were set based on market valuation at the close of trading on May 31. We launched the index on June 1 with a starting value of 200, as this is a 2.0 style of equity index.

As with the S&P 500 and the majority of equity indexes, the largest names in the portfolio carry a higher impact. That said, we’ve modified the weightings so that the top few names don’t overshadow the smaller components, which is what tends to happen with other closely-followed indexes.

We will rebalance the index annually, re-ranking and resetting the weightings to the initial levels. Should a company leave the index between re-balancings through acquisition or other reason, it will be replaced with a component that carries an equal weighting.
