My Holiday Mall Walk, Part 1

Ah, yes, it is that time of year again -- Christmas trees are decorated, lights are hung and shopping occurs in my holiday mall walks. If you're new to these, each year I make a number of trips to the malls around the Washington, DC area to get a feel for which stores are busy and which ones are filled with dust bunnies. In the region there are a number of high-end malls, like Tysons Corner Center, that rank in the top 10 U.S. shopping malls as per the Travel Channel and other media outlets. For trivia fans, Tysons Corner was the home of the very first Apple (AAPL) store, the first L.L. Bean store outside of Maine, and it showcased the racy Victoria's Secret overhaul several years ago.

As I've said in the past, it would be a rookie mistake to equate foot traffic with actual purchasing activity, which is why I focus on shopping bags. Also, "showrooming" has become a growing phenomenon as consumers browse in person but increasingly buy online for convenience, deals or both.
