Although it is still underweight in my own portfolio, the environment for the retail sector seems to be brightening. Consumer confidence is strong, despite apprehension about both presidential candidates. Job growth is also solid -- and we have even seen some wage growth recently. The latest jobs report also showed, encouragingly, that people were coming back to the workforce.

In addition, the NPD Group recently forecast that it expects retail sales to be up 3.6% this holiday season over the same period a year ago. Not stellar, but more than solid.
