Playing the Gold Miners ETF

Last week, Freeport McMoran (FCX) offered some taste of gold exposure, although it comes with copper as well, which was more of the focus at the time. Today, I'm going a bit more direct by adding the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) .

There's no secret to the breakout in precious metals as of late. If not for FCX, I'd feel completely late to the party. I suppose I could argue my tepid view as of late for equities could be interpreted by some as supportive of precious metals, but I believe that's being far too generous. Gold is a bit more macro here, a play on the volatility and instability we are seeing in both social interaction and political regimes both here and abroad.
