Inventories Could Mean Trouble in Store

House prices, as measured by the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index, advanced 4.3% from a year ago in October, and disposable personal incomes jumped by the most in nine months in November, according to the Personal Income and Outlays report.

Yet consumers barely opened their wallets during this holiday season. MasterCard Advisor's Spending Pulse report showed just a 0.7% increase in year-over-year holiday spending. Analysts had expected sales to grow 3% to 4%, and this represented the weakest holiday season since the depths of the recession in 2008.
