Vitamins May Not Help Your Portfolio

Over the last year, the shares of GNC (GNC), Vitamin Shoppe (VSI), Nu Skin (NUS) and Vitacost (VITC) have all been strong performers. What all four of these companies have in common is that they tap into the $12 billion vitamin and supplement industry. The thought among many, including myself, is that as the population not only ages but contends with poor diet and obesity, more people would be taking vitamins and supplements. I take them every day. 

New research, however, seems to challenge how effective vitamins and supplements are. In the new issue of Annals of Internal Medicine, three articles discuss the role of vitamin and supplements when it comes to the prevention of chronic diseases. The first included a test among 400,000 participants across three trials of multivitamin supplements and 24 trials of single or paired vitamins and found there was no clear evidence of beneficial effect on "all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease or cancer." ...322 more words left in this article.
