Apple Edges Into the Payments Space

This week, I visited a few D.C.-area Apple (AAPL) stores, not to Christmas shop -- the lines were solid at all of the stores, and it sure seems the iPad family will be a big winner this holiday season -- but to check out its new iBeacon offering that has been deployed across all of Apple's stores.

There's a lot of talk about mobile payments, from the Starbucks (SBUX) app -- one of my favorites -- to Google's (GOOG) Wallet and PayPal (EBAY) and devices powered by near-field communications supplied by the likes of NXP Semiconductors (NXPI). The race is on to figure out mobile payments, and chatter among industry consultants says that NFC-based solutions are simply too expensive to deploy.
