With the all-important (and rarely reliable) employment-situation report scheduled for 8:30 a.m. EST Friday, we entered Thursday's session with an eye toward a nontrend day. Now, for the uninitiated, a nontrend day simply refers to a session with a smaller than normal initial balance (first hour of regular-session trading), and limited, if any, extension beyond the initial balance high and low. This type of day structure, which signifies a complete lack of direction conviction, is relatively common ahead of holidays and major economic events.
