Agilent Tops the S&P 500

Agilent Technologies (A) is the top gainer in the S&P 500 today. The stock closed up over 8% on extremely heavy trade after the medical technology company reported its first-quarter results last night. Above-expectation profits sparked a powerful upside gap on the bell that lifted the stock to new 52-week highs. Agilent remained well bid since the open as it begins to put some distance on a very healthy consolidation. After today's big burst of momentum, Agilent is set up well for more upside.

Eight weeks ago, Agilent broke out, after management announced that it would split in two. Volume pacing the 3.35% advance was the stock's highest in years.  Three weeks later, after the momentum of a two-day buying surge wore off, Agilent filled the huge Sept. 19 gap. Since then, the stock has been in consolidation mode while volume steadily contracted. Last week, Agilent put in a higher monthly low as the narrow consolidation continued.
