Markets were mixed to kick off what is often one of the slowest trading weeks of the year, the week before Labor Day weekend. The Dow and S&P 500 slumped to small gains on paltry volume, while the Nasdaq eked out a gain thanks to another impressive performance from its fearless leader. Apple (AAPL) led the tech-heavy index higher, thanks to a landmark ruling that Samsung infringed on its touchscreen patents with several of its smartphones and tablets.
Apple won $1 billion in the suit against Samsung, but the bigger impact will likely come in the coming months as Samsung scrambles to remake its phones to comply with seemingly blurry lines between legal and illegal.
