Last October, Apple (AAPL) introduced its iPhone 4S model, thereby shifting its rollout date from several months earlier in the year. With Apple widely expected to make several product announcements on Sept. 12, several other smartphone manufacturers are looking to edge out Apple. Will the strategy work? Hard to say.

Over the last few years, expected announcements from Apple have hung like a dark cloud over the annual Consumer Electronics Show and with a major iPhone design overhaul in the works as well as a new iOS, Nokia (NOK) and Google's (GOOG) Motorola Mobility business need to impress.
