Tumbleweeds in the Shopping Malls
Last week I shared the findings from my initial weekend back-to-school shopping-mall walk, which I took during the August 2012 sales-tax holiday. As a reminder, stores such as Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) and J.C. Penney (JCP) were crowded and the lines were deep. While the lines at Penney's were good this weekend, they were not as long. Even Dick's, which was mobbed last week, saw fewer shopper milling around the store. I was told that largely reflected the kick off of football practice this past week.
Those two stores aside, overall traffic at the mall was much thinner than it was last week, which likely means the tax holiday weekend pulled forward demand, at least at the margin. It's not as if the retailers weren't trying to lure in those who journeyed to the mall.
