Amid the frenzy of earnings this week (more than 1,100 companies issued quarterly results) and the big beats by Facebook (FB), Starbucks (SBUX) and others vs. disappointing results from the likes of (AMZN), we received illuminating data. Not quite under the radar, Strategy Analytics issued its take on mobile phone and smartphone industry shipments for the June 2013 quarter. While there was no change in the trend we have seen over the last several quarters (smartphone growth has easily outpaced basic and feature mobile phone growth), digging through the findings offers several insights.

Year over year, smartphone shipments grew 47% and on a sequential basis grew 10% in the June 2013 quarter. While basic mobile phones grew a paltry 4% year over year, the real revelations were not to be had in the growth rate comparison.
