In my travels over the last few weeks, which included fun visits to several amusement parks as well as the beach, I've kept my eye on my fellow vacationers. One could not help but notice that, while people were out to relax and enjoy themselves, spending was restrained. One of the more interesting observations at the beach was the number of folks who were lugging coolers and drinking soda bearing the names of Walgreen (WAG), Publix, Wal-Mart (WMT), Kroger (KR), Costco (COST), Target (TGT) and other drug-store and grocery-store chains. It seems not as many are having a Coke (KO) and smiling this summer.
Consumption on private-label brands has been on the rise over the last few years as consumers have felt the pinch amid tight disposable income, stubbornly high unemployment rates and higher prices. While gas prices have fallen over the last several weeks, recent tensions in the Middle East could drive them modestly upward near-term.
