After a significant rally in June that saw the sector finally break through stubborn upward resistance levels that had been in place for a year and a half, biotech has spent July so far largely just consolidating these gains. This is understandable, especially in light of dormant M&A activity and the fact that second-quarter earnings reports will not start to hit until the end of the month.

Sentiment on the sector has noticeably improved in 2017, after this part of the market was a woeful underperformer since its last peak in the summer of 2015.
