Streaming Music Could Drown These Stocks

New data from Nielsen Holdings confirm the continued shift in consumer preferences to streaming music from album sales and digital downloads. For the first six months of 2014, sales of albums (CDs, cassettes and digital albums) fell 14.9% from the first six months of 2013, while digital track sales fell 13% over the same period. Not to be snarky, but I was even surprised to find that music is still available on cassette.

Parsing the data, we find that even sales of digital albums fell almost 12% year over year in the first half of 2014 compared with the same time frame in 2013. And for those of you Real Money Pro subscribers who are re-embracing vinyl albums, yes, those sales are growing, but only 4 million units were sold in the first half of 2014, compared with 2.9 million for the first six months of 2013.
