Coal, steel and iron. For someone who comes from coal-mining country, these words evoke images of blue-collar workers covered in soot and sweat emerging from a mine. I saw many pictures like this of my grandfather, who worked in the mines and steel mills of Pittsburgh. (Many folks there pronounce "steel" in a way that sounds more like "still," and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention a certain football team that comes to mind whenever I hear the word.)
