AT&T Move Is Not a Transformation

Over the weekend the news broke that AT&T (T) has agreed to acquire DirecTV (DTV) in a $49 billion. While many are pointing toward this as the latest deal to shift the media landscape following the acquisition of Time Warner Cable (TWC) by Comcast (CMCSA) I have to say I agree and disagree.

I agree with the notion that we are seeing a continued shift in the media industry. More viewers are going on online to consumer digital content, particularly video content. There is ample anecdotal evidence of this -- who hasn't binged on Netflix's (NFLX) House of Cards?  And recent announcements from Amazon.com (AMZN), Yahoo! (YHOO), Hulu and others about original programming tell us there is no slowdown coming. Even Apple's (AAPL) much rumored acquisition of Beats points to the shifting landscape as well as the need to stay as close to cutting edge as possible....411 more words left in this article.
