April Retail Sales Preview

Tuesday brings the April retail sales report courtesy of the Census Bureau, and expectations call for a flat figure following a 1.2% increase in March. Excluding autos, the consensus expectation is for retail sales to be up 0.2% compared with 0.7% in March. There are, however, a few reasons to think that April retail sales could surprise on the upside.

First is better weather, while another is the late Easter holiday. Some may say to themselves, "Easter is not that big of a holiday," but I would beg to differ. On its own, it's a driver of candy, dining out and clothing. However, Easter tends to be bookended by spring-break vacations and, as I pointed out a few weeks ago, that tends to be very good for theme park operators like Disney (DIS), Comcast (CMCSA) and SeaWorld (SEAS), hotels such as Hilton Worldwide (HLT), Marriott International (MAR), Starwood (HOT), and airlines JetBlue (JBLU), Delta (DAL) and American (AAL) among others....299 more words left in this article.
