When trying to decide between potential investment opportunities, it always surprises me how much emphasis stock investors and financial advisors put on historical returns. I'm sure we've heard the disclaimer that "past results are not indicative of future returns" countless times, but for some that apparently goes in one ear and out the other.

When evaluating potential ETF investments for my own portfolio, I place little stock in the historical performance figures. Those are largely irrelevant. But there are plenty of metrics that I do consider when trying to pick between similar ETFs, an increasingly common occurrence as the ETF lineup continues to grow.
