Peering Beyond the Nutrition Retailers

Amid the Herbalife (HLF) news yesterday over in Columnist Conversation I posed the question to my Real Money Pro compatriots: Would they rather buy nutritional product companies or buy a nutritional ingredients company? For what it's worth, I tend to be the kind of investor who buys the bullets, not the gun. Let's take a quick look at what's going on in the industry.

A few months back, the Centers for Disease Control released a report showing that more of half of U.S. adults use dietary supplements -- a rise from 42% in 1988 to 53% in 2006. Two examples of that increased usage can be found in women over 60, as close to 61% of these women now take calcium vs. 28% back in 1994.
