Dollar Tree Really Grows

Tough economic times since the Great Recession of 2008 have driven consumers downscale. High-end retailer Nordstrom (JWN) and middle-market Kohl's (KSS) only grew earnings per share by about 27% and 23%, respectively, between 2007 and 2012. Target (TGT) did a bit better. The 800-pound gorilla, Wal-Mart (WMT), improved earnings by almost 59%.

But super discounter Dollar Tree (DLTR) saw EPS jump nearly fourfold over the same five-year span. It's no surprise that DLTR carries the highest multiple of this quintet.
