Jumping on General Electric

We've had a bumpy ride over the last week thanks to the ongoing turmoil in the Ukraine with Russia President Vladimir Putin. Despite what looks to be a short lived distraction, we were once again hit with another severe winter storm -- and yes, it took me quite a while to dig out with my trusty shovel. But I did and that time allowed me to digest a number of favorable economic data points received over the preceding days.

Among those data points was a very robust purchasing managers' index (PMI) reading for the U.S. economy. The February reading from Markit Economics showed a significant month over month jump in output, new orders, backlogs and new export orders. All told, it was the strongest month for manufacturing since May 2010, despite the impact of the winter storms.
