Smartphone Wars Heat Up
Over the past month, shares of wireless intellectual property and licensor InterDigital (IDCC) have dropped from a high near $44 to a low near $39. The shares have underperformed the larger stock market and today the shares are down another 4%, to about $42, which I attribute to news that Google (GOOG) has again purchased patents from IBM (IBM), this time obtaining 217 patents. Google also purchased patents from IBM this past summer, when it acquired 1,030 filings in July; 1,022 filings in August; and 41 filings September.
The most recent filings cover a variety of topics ranging from blade servers, server load balancing and email administration to network performance. Also in the lot were filings that would be beneficial to Google's Android smartphone platform, such as portable operating-system updating, transferring Web applications between devices, voice-based keyword searching and a computer phone patent....638 more words left in this article.
